Several references on the Internet (e.g. https://github.com/couchbase/sync_gateway/issues/302) indicate that this problem can be caused by the counter stored in the _sync:seq document (in the shadow bucket) having been corrupted. However, I have checked this, and this document contains a single whole number (only), which I believe is correct.
