On the note of the opacity of this button, we've actually tried that in the
design phase as well. But ultimately, the goal of this button is to provide
a clear and familiar way for users to access their controls. Setting an
opacity on this button made it visually compete with the background content
too much. This conflicted with the goal of this button.

Making it even more transparent meant losing the obviousness of this button
altogether. Since reading in that corner of the screens seems less of a
priority than taking an action, we decided to prioritize that functionality
over "how legible is the text underneath this button?".
