BANGALORE: No more ugly arguments. No more haggling. The next time you
travel by autorickshaw you can find out exactly how much you have to
shell
out - thanks to a text-based mobile phone application that will be
launched
on Thursday. And you needn't be a smartphone user to avail the service.
Using the app, Autofare, is a simple affair. All you have to do is send
a
message in a specified format to a hotline number. You will immediately
receive details about the distance and fare. If you're travelling from
Koramangala to Hebbal, the distance will be 16.4km and the tariff
Rs212.2.
The information will mention prominent landmarks en route to the
destination. The sender will have to bear the SMS cost.
The platform is accessible to most categories of commuters - those with
smartphones or even basic phones, those with access to Google Talk and
Facebook messenger or even those with no internet connection. All you
need
is a mobile.
Autofare has been put together by traffic police and global business and
financial management solutions provider, Intuit Inc. Developed by travel
startup Idophone, it's part of the platform txtWeb hosted by Intuit.
TextWeb
can be used to get instant information on various services - bus
details,
Google Maps locator, live traffic updates and emergency numbers. The
format
of the SMS remains almost the same.
How to use service
SMS @autofare city, source, destination to 51115. Eg: @autofare
Bangalore,
MG Road, Indiranagar to 51115.
The reply shows: Autofare details% for Bangalore; From: Mahatma Gandhi
Road,
Bangalore; To: Indiranagar, Bangalore
Distance: 5.9km; Tariff: Rs75.7 (approximately)
Important landmarks: Residency Cross Road, Kamraj Road
