You can try to switch to QMI mode by switching to USB interface
configuration #1; e.g. as the previous reporter did (you'll need to
specify the proper usb path):
echo 1 > /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-11/bConfigurationValue

special kernel settings or whatever?

It would need the qmi_wwan driver in the kernel, and ModemManager
compiled with libqmi support.

Thanks, but loading the qmi_wwan driver didn't change anything. Maybe the chip doesn't support qmi.
