I am reading this thread for a while. In the meantime I am also an owner of an rpi.
The old raspbian wheezy is very much outdated. My "jessie" is unfortunately very unstable (maybe my upgrade wasn't correctly run). Because I am new to this arch and debian I will need some time to put things together. The minimum requirements of modemmanager and qmi are already mentioned. I can also confirm that the E398 is working on x86_64 - in all kind of possible use cases. My first impression of the rpi, it should work there. I have had problems with some unwanted network daemons. For testing I prefer to do step by step manually. This is hard in time of systemd and dbus and thousand different network-configs, every distribution is different.
