so its late and i cant sleep and so i thought since i cant sleep id take
up some of my time and yours and tell you what i think of every modest
mouse song. a lot of this is prolly going to be less-than-interesting
but i figure people can comment and such. hell i got like 9 emails from
the list alone after one guy asks about favorites. so here goes. i
split it up into two parts. the 7"s and ep's / the full lengths (and
TFTAI)
and semi-rarities. im getting the paracites session thing in 5 days so
that should be interestin.

5 4 3 2 1 lisp off - that guy talking in the background.. the astronaut
clip..... reminds me of in pulp fiction when the little butch is about to get
the gold watch and that eskimo is on TV going "that totem pole been here
for-evah!"

all-night diner - hated this one at first but then also saw it for its true
beauty. and whoever said that shit about "i have sex im always thinkin bout the
pavement"... i think thats the topic in #modestmouse on DALnet right now. it is
such a neet line. yes indeedy. i started saying "8-ball" because of this .

Beach Side Property - Man... when i first heard this i was like "turn it off
man". but then i saw it for the true beauty that it was (this happens to me a
lot). and everyone knows the songs that dont strike your attention for a while
are always far superior to those that do. the thing about the memo on the
forehead of god.. i love it.

Birds Vs. Worms - you know... i dont like this song either. the opening isnt
bad.. but when he starts singing i could just care less.

Blue-Cadet three Do You Connect - So simple.. yet so ... creepy.

Broke - whoever on this list said something about broke being damn good was
right. and its like.. two chords and simple to play. sometimes im so full of
shit that it should be a crime :~)

buttons are pushing the buttons - eh. no real opinion... too damn noise. before
i read the words i had no interest in knowing what he said. if thats any clue to
what i think.

Dukes Up - Same deal as "It Always Rains On a Picnic" - the lead guitar part
just kinda get ya... and then when he sings youre just filled with this strange
feeling. isaac works in mysterious ways.

Edit The Sad Parts - definetly one of my favorite five. because the first four
lines are lines i wish i had written. damn that boy is so honest. yet sometimes
he can be such a DICK you know? like in concert. but only sometimes. its songs
like this that make me wonder why so many people out there put up a front when
it comes to sharing their true feelings about things.

Every Penny Fed Car - also very oldish modest mouse sounding... but not my
favoritest song to listen to... maybe its the recording quality.. or maybe its
not a very good song. the world may never know.

Four Fingered Fisherman - using neet signing notes to sing makes this song
friggin rocking. if i saw modest mouse and they opened with this and i had never
heard them before i would be very impressed. yeh.. this is a friggin awesome
song. damn good words in a simple way you know?

Grey Ice Water - I don't like this song all that much either... its too lofty or
something.. doesnt really hold a whole lot of meaning... like if i were at a
mouse concert and they played this i wouldnt be impressed i guess.

interstate 8 - i like to tell people they are angels with amber halos black hair
and the devils pitchfork. they always look at me funny and go "what?" its good
but not all that listenable. like.. if you didnt like the mouse i wouldnt
suggest listening to this song first.. you know?

It always Rains On A Picnic - i like it. in the style of this arpeggiated mouse
guitar thing he's got goin especially with the older stuff.. just hearing
"downpour downpour" makes you think of a sad kinda day you mighta had where it
did rain on your picnic.

life of arctic sounds - before i go ta good version of this song (dont ask) some
girl had put it on a tape for me. and i heard it and said "what the fuck is this
shit. hel-lo... did we lose our creativity?" and then i understood the way
modest mouse works. and i said "wow.. what a good song. so powerful at the end.
all the sad comedians hey alright i might be goddamned. he wins for saying
"goddamn" the most times in a 30 second interval. the music behind this one is
just downright fucking awesome

medication - also on my top five (theres like 9 songs on my top five) because
the stuff that leads the song in and brings it out is the kind of poem-esque
stuff that i really appreciate. you know how sometimes people write poems and
its just pathetic and lame? but amongst all the shit that you hear you might
hear one choice poem that really gets you. this is it. especially the part about
all the doctors trading sadness for numbness. man .. times like these i wish i
could write like that.

Neverending Math Equation - also genius-as-hell. people hear the opening line
and go "damn". modest mouse will align the planets and create world peace and
harmony. oh wait.. that was bill and ted's band "wyld stallions". close enough.
oh my god i feel so damn old.

novocain stain - jusging by my email name youre prolly right if you guess i like
this. the non-demo track is a lot better than the I8 version. this should be
about a girl or pain or something and not the whole surburbian land rape thing.
because it has so much more potential to summon that sick regretful feeling we
all get sometimes.

Other Peoples Lives - its not bad but way too repetetive for a 7 minute song. i
love hearing the part about momma's boy. other than that, yeah .. wicked
repetetive.

positive/negative - so much better on the broke 7" when you can understand what
he says half the time..... first time i heard it i was very touched... now it
doesnt touch me in the same way but sort of.... i think about what it means and
often get confused.. but it certainly at least makes me think.

Sleepwalking (Couples Only Prom Night) - i played this on the radio once and
this girl who likes modest mouse but had never heard it thought that it was a
band ripping modest mouse off. can't go wrong with "earth angel" chord
progression. I also played this at an open mic once, just me and a guitar. one
guitar and one voice makes this a really boring song to play at an open mic. in
case you were curious. white trash always makes me laugh. i guess its because i
live in new hampshire.

tundra/desert - ahhhhhhhhh another one on my top five. the lyrics to this really
get to me too. and its not like they are really sad... but its like every
winning opinion... i wish i had one. and the chanting thing in the back is damn
good. although it sounds like what hes saying makes no sense whatsoever.

Woodgrain - sounds like a shitty song i might have wrote in 8th grade. and i
stress shitty.

Working On Leaving the Living - can we say "lets fill up half a record with boredom?"
