Interesting story--the first time I heard the word 'emo' was 2 years ago...i
ran into this singer who I hadn't seen for a while. we were talking about
music and our bands and he goes, "We're EMO now!" Just a few years before
this guy was calling his band "grunge". I'm like, "what the fuck is emo,
dude?" and he starts talking about drive like jehu and some other bands (who
are all good bands, IMHO).
I had recently discovered modest mouse so I asked if he had heard them. He
said he had but he was not into them or something.
is modest mouse 'emo'?
according to all of the 'emo' people i know, most of whom are in 'emo'
bands, wear 'emo' clothes, and cry a lot, modest mouse is not 'emo.' don't
know why--perhaps it's cuz the mouse has a sense of humor. these 'emo'
folks, they like to yell and cry for the most part. but the mouse, i get
the impression that the mouse likes to yell and cry and laugh and drink.
however, most of the emo 'bois', as these 'emo' fellas i know call
themselves, have phat-ass sideburns, like the kind mr. brock had (or still
has? i dont know). Maybe that's where the connection is.
Here in detroit the emo folks seem to have distanced themselves from the
mouse--braid, promise ring, etc etc are all 'emo' and hip, but you hardly
ever hear modest mouse on the 'emo' college radio shows. and modest mouse
usually doesnt come up in 'emo'-conversation.
and that's all there is to know about 'emo' bois and gurls in detroit. not
that anyone wanted to know.
