UP Records Christmas Party
Hosted by Dina Martina
w/ Modest Mouse, Mike Johnson, and the Sick Bees.
Showed up early to make sure we could get stamped, and
regardles of the "no recording devices" sign on the wall, I managed to make my
way towards the back of the room towards the sound board without getting my bag
checked. Of course, Eric Satnik was already there all jazzed and plugged
into the board with his mini-disc so I almost bagged setting up, but
decided to plug my DAT in just in case his bombed.
I quickly retreated to the cha-cha for a few drinks.
That place is so god damn smokey, jesus. Didn't help I had a terrible cold
and should have been drinking tea instead of scotch on the rocks. The
cha-cha has a new room in the back, and it's pathway is right were this table
used to sit in the corner. Bizarre, I thought I was seeing things at first
as I hazily glanced down what seemed to be a new set of stairs oozing into a
loby of Hispanic decor. After an hour or so of that, we headed back down
to the Re-Bar to catch the last note of the Sick Bees. I guess Mike
Johnson cancelled, so they just started the show later. It really was a
nice atmosphere at the Re-Bar last night, real cozy. The Re-Bar is a small
club with a bar in the left hand side of the room that sits pretty much in the
center. Behind the bar is a good size dance floor with a nice stage and
pool tables off to the left. The bathrooms have swinging cowboy style
doors, pretty swank, eh? They do a lot of plays their, and so it was
nicely ornamented with Christmas cheer. This only added to the ambiance as
the Mouse started to tune and pluck their instruments on stage. Jeremiah
was tapping on some new device he seemed to drag into the club for the
Avant-Noise sound. Looked like a large silver milk canister, but made a
metallic pling when struck. The club instantly filled up, and the mouse
set to their ways, played some rock for us. Isaac stated that "Let's all
sit back and relax, and havea good time. If anyone has requests, just let
me know". He just flew in from Florida the day before for christmas, since
he is living down there with his girlfriend right now. He said he was
pretty bummed on the place, and was moving back quickly. I forgot to
mention, they were playing the new Modest Mouse record before the show started,
it's really good, really polished though.
I never know the names of their songs, but they are always
familiar. I know they played dramamine, which was cool. They started
at 11 and ended by 12:15 which was cool. It sounded amazing in that room,
for some reason, it just really sounded good. Maybe it was the winter
solstice, I dunno. Kelly is a really good sound engineer, and he made it
sound tops. I'm excited to get a copy of the new album in my hands, will
probably be one of the chart topers next year.
yes, mp3's will be around soon.
