from today's seattle times ticket section (12/23/99): Best show of the year (local band): Modest Mouse, Showbox, June 17. The quirky Isaac Brock is strange and profound; he has been criticized for giving erratic performances, but on this night was sublime, howling his songs with a mixture of rage and angst, his oddlytuned guitar sounding at turns joyful and melancholic. As this year, decade, century, and millenium come to an end, Brock's "Heart Cooks Brain" (from the 1997 Modest Mouse album, "The Lonesome Crowded West") itches at the paradoxes of our postmodern world: "In this life that we call home the years go fast and the days go so slow"
