from today's seattle times ticket section (12/23/99):

Best show of the year (local band): Modest Mouse, Showbox, June 17. The
quirky Isaac Brock is strange and profound; he has been criticized for
giving erratic performances, but on this night was sublime, howling his
songs with a mixture of rage and angst, his oddlytuned guitar sounding
at turns joyful and melancholic.

As this year, decade, century, and millenium come to an end, Brock's
"Heart Cooks Brain" (from the 1997 Modest Mouse album, "The Lonesome
Crowded West") itches at the paradoxes of our postmodern world:

"In this life that we call home
the years go fast and
the days go so slow"
