Yes, in fact I am a smartass. And an asshole. Hell,
throw the book at me, I was just relaying facts. Some
elements of conversation do not translate well to the
homogenous world of the internet. I do the best I can
with what I got, toots.
If I was in fact being snide, it is only because there
seems to be some element of disbelief about the notion
of an official release by Modest Mouse that simply was
not released in their homeland. Very simply put, the
band manufactured an official EP of new music that was
to be sold exclusively in Japan coordinating with a
tour that was occurring at the same time. This
concept of a "Japanese tour EP" is actually not
uncommon in the indie rock architecture, all things
considered. Pavement released the Shady Lane Japanese
Tour EP back in 1997 (which is the only place you can
find "I Love Perth" and "Shady Lane (Krossfader)" on
CD). The Delta 72 also released one about two years
back, but it was recently reissued domestically. I
guess I just don't understand why people would ask a
question on a mailing list, receive a definitive
answer, and then contest that answer as if to say that
they were not satisfied with what they were told.
There's nothing "bootleg" or "unofficial" about a
recording released on a band's overseas label.
Although Modest Mouse was signed to Up at the time,
their records were distributed by Rebel Beat Factory
in Japan (and Matador in Europe, in case you were
wondering). This practice is not unheard of, and I
don't see what the big misunderstanding is about.
Official release, not released in USA, not a bootleg.
If the confusion involved what I posted ages ago, you
were referencing a message that I wrote while I was
still trying to find out if K would be selling the
remaining copies of the tour EP in Amurica. They did
eventually (sell about 30) before they were given the
axe from the bigwigs in their stark plastic offices
with those stoic looks upon their leather-upholstered
faces, fingers folded over one another, twitching with
the anticipation of freshly-minted money being
scrunched in their nicotine-stained hands, withered
and wrinkled from the corruption of money that comes
at the hands of childish greed. That's right.
Leigh mentioned hockey pucks and I have Cup Fever...
*sigh*... I'm feeling twitterpainted now...
