hey i use a sony mz-r70 MD and i have the same features as what u have neil, but i use
a stereo lapel mic (also sony, came with my recordable walkman) and i'd recommend not
using it. its not equipped to handle even vaguely "loud" sounds (including vocals) and
distorts very easily. BUT it picks up room noise (and ppl's conversations) very easily
though - which puts up in a quandary becoz if u stand too close to the speakers, the
mic shits itself and it distorts, if you're too far it will only pick up the
conversations. ack! i'm still trying to work around the whole distortion problem.
as for the recording level, make sure its not just a volume control. i thought mine
could adjust levels during recording too, but apparently it cant, becoz i recorded an
entire show on 0 level and it still came out distorted. its more important to make
sure that the levels arent peaking constantly (ie hitting the last level indicator
every two seconds).
as for recording into the soundboard, its not hard, there's usually an auxiliary out
line for you to plug the mono cable into, but having spoken to a lot of sound guys
they say the sound isnt as good, becoz the soundboard focuses predominantly on the
vocals, bass drums and guitar amps which makes it a little uneven.
er thats my contribution!
cheers
