Isn't this a bug in iTunes then?
Surely the connection between proxy and iTunes times out if left for too
long...?

Ok.
I am still chasing the Akamai bug. It seems something nasty has happened
recently, as ftp directory listings have also mysteriously hosed
themsaelves. I'm busy moving to London this weekend, but when this is
over I'll dig into the code again.
