Lithium is usually prescribed for manic depression to counter the effects of
mania. In order to control for depression, Zoloft, Prozac, or Paxil may be
prescribed. Shock (ECT) therapy continues to exist because it works on
elderly patients who do not respond to psychotropic medications. However,
it is used as a last resort type option and it is banned in the city of
Berkeley, CA.
