Over the weekend, I went down to sunny(for a while anyway) Skegness for the
Undergorund Mod Rally. Skegness, I hear you say? Skagness surely.
Well Well well! I can honestly say that the Underground Mod Society
really rocked that poor hotel till the early hours of the morning and left
me wondering if I'd ever come down. From the first record, the amazing Sam
Fletcher's, 'I'd Think It Over Twice', I knew that this was gonna be a class
show. All night long, I can honestly say that I missed dancing to 7 songs.
And three of those were revival tracks. It was the most consistently great
music at any venue I have ever been to. Great crowd, apart from some silly
bird in a red dress who kept looking at me like I was a piece of shit off
her shoe (needless to say I returned the proverbial!) Everyone sharp as can
be! All night, fantastic R'n'B, midtempo stormers, and just great Northern
soul relentlessly kept me on the floor. From Timmie Williams' Competition to
my fave song ever.. to a surprise R'n'B play from Mr Graeme Very with a tune
I got not so long back, Ike &Tina Turner's 'Two Is A Couple'.
Lee Miller, if rather the worse for wear, was on top form, even if he
never played the Bobby Smith I asked him for! Suposedly ending at 1:30, they
just kept them dancing till 2am. 6 hours of some of the greasest black music
ever recorded. Seriously it was that good.
And the venue had the greatest dancefloor I've ever been on, and
that's saying something. It's rather telling that they had a Northern Soul
weekender there not so long back.
So a big thanks to all those involved in making such a great night
and I can't wait to hear all that stuff again in March over in
Scarborough.....
Matt.....
p.s. I didn't get paid for this. Though I ought to have been!!
