hey anja,
haven't seen any posts here, but there have been tons on the bomp-list.
here's mine:
###
here's my blurry recap of the weekend.
i skipped friday.
saturday:
like i mentioned, i got to meet a bunch of bomp-listers at the blind tiger,
all of whom were super-cool (i'd list names, but i don't wanna forget
anyone). started drinking there, guinness and then jim beam. got to the
westbeth, which was set-up nicely, with a bunch of booths and pizza from two
boots and started drinking the $2 rhinegolds which are evil!!! (though of
course i drank them all weekend and am still suffering the effects). also
bought a few discs from the fine folks at sundazed, who had quite the stylin'
booth set up.
THE MOONEY SUZUKI were fantastic as always -- they played with nary a pause
between songs and tons and tons of energy. i think they won over everyone who
had yet to see them live. i did miss the "i'm not talking" cover though... i
really dug THE LOONS set (hi mike and anja!), especially the "love song" they
apologized for. i think they did great considering it's a totally new band
from the lp, with the exception of mike... DEAD MOON are not at all my thing,
though i enjoyed them for one song... THE VIPERS sounded really great -- a
nice surprise, though i didn't watch their whole set as i was busy -- can you
guess? -- drinking. you couldn't hear weiss' vocals all that well though, so
i missed his dig at the bomp-list... THE CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND were fantastic,
despite their guitar sound, which to my ears sounded more '80s than '60s.
they did all the songs you'd want to hear including an especially scorching
"i'm not like everybody else." well, they were fantastic *until* they kicked
into their new songs. ugh, their new songs. i felt bad bailing on them, and
out of respect stayed for two of the new cuts, but i just couldn't deal for
long and headed back to brooklyn for some much needed grub...
sunday:
i'll agree with everyone, THE GREENHORNS were great. i loved the soul-touches
to some of their songs which reminded me of the early who covers of stuff
like james brown. oh yeah, and both singers had really great voices... i
missed most of the 5,6,7,8s set due to drinking, though what i heard sounded
pretty decent. during their set i got to talk to a guy who played in RICHARD
AND THE YOUNG LIONS who told me that they will be playing in the city soon
and that they played somewhere last week -- very cool! he told me a few cool
'60s stories as well... THE FLESHTONES were great all around and the crowd
ate it up. a truly underrated band with loads of stage-presence... THE MONKS.
good fuckin' lord, the monks!!! they were amazing through and through. loud,
proud (old) and punk!!! damn. damn. damn. everything about them was perfect
-- that's all i can say. perfect... after their set i thought it would take a
small miracle for THE STANDELLS to impress and miracles there were a-plenty
(how about that for a sentance?). they were fantastic and they did *no* new
songs. everything was phenomenal (especially dick dodd's voice), though i was
especially impressed by "barracuda" and "try it!" seriously, they were so
damn solid... man oh man, what a night!!!
