To my ears, Both the Outsiders and Q65 peaked before their second albums.
While some regard The Outsiders "Q.C." album a psychedelic masterpiece, I
don't agree. I find it a little thin, if not meandering. Q65's second
album was 1969 (I think) and while I have only heard a few songs from it,
it sounds as if they went downhill quickly after their "Ann" single in '68.
Somehow, they managed to kick around through a large portion of the 70's
though. Basically, if you have the first albums, and a few select singles
which have all been compiled and re-released at various stages, you've
heard what you need to. I suspect that Tony Sanchez, and Anja Diabolik
will be able to shed more light.
In fact, I would be pretty excited if Tony put out a Dutch comp himself.
The Motions seem to have Love them and Hate them camps. I fall squarely
into the Love them camp. Buy what you can find! The Zips I'm admittedly
less familiar with, but haven't been all that impressed with what little I
have heard.
Dutch beat is a bit of a strange creature, in that the "creme de la creme"
is pretty thin. A number of bands managed some brilliant 45s here and
there, but few were consistant, e.g. Golden Earring, Rodys and Cuby & the
Blizzards. I was really excited about a year ago to find a 1967 LP on
Capitol by the Golden Earring at a local store, only to be put to sleep by it.
I would be uncomfortable really recommending any Dutch comps other than the
two "Nederbeat Series" comps, though I haven't heard the one on
Distortions. I suppose the Pebbles Dutch comps are still pretty well worth
it.
