>From a longtime Dutch beat fan: I just heard the Zips LP collection and
after a few listens I'm still shaking my head. Veeeery interesting. I
think it's pretty great. I'm at work and don't have it here to reference
the tracks, but I know one side has a very long beat poetry/spoken word
track that gets pretty tedious even for being so
over-the-top..............and my fave tune of the collection is "Marie
Juana" - a totally exaggerated 'syke' track with all the fixings: spooky
harpsichord interludes, loads of lush orchestral 12-string strumming and
completely hilarious lyrics about drugs and 'pyscho-delic sounds' sung in
broken English and trying to sound VERY abstract and cryptic. Oooo - get
your chalice! It really sounds laughable, but it's actually very cool.
There are some pretty straight-up freakbeat and rock tunes as well - I would
recommend it, even just for "Marie Juana," which stuck in my head for days
after I first heard it. I dig the Motions too, particularly "I Got
Misery". I also like the Golden Earrings (they called themselves 'Golden
Earring' later I think)- particularly their 2nd album "Winter Harvest" it's
chock full of great introspective Dutch beat balladry and beautiful 60's pop
sounds. It's the only record I ever was really struck by how much a
difference there is listening to the CD in stereo and the LP in mono! The
mono LP sounds amazing. I don't really like anything by Q65 other than
their early stuff. "Cry in the Night" is one of the ranchiest and raw
sounding songs ever. I also like some Jay-Jays stuff ("Today I'm Gay") and
of course the Outsiders - they were my first exposure to the Dutch beat
sound. My b/f is a big Cuby and the Blizzards fan but frankly their brand
of sleepy blues rock puts me to sleep.....

Glad to see some Dutch beat talk on Modslist! Here is a link to a good page
about some well-known and lesser-known, and just plain weird Dutch groups.
