In most U.S. states, the law requires your bike to have an engine of at least 150cc (for example Arizona, California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey) to ride on a freeway, and I certainly would advise riding on a highway with anything smaller. Arkansas law states the minimum is 250cc, but no cops hassled me when I rode my P200 on I-55 from Missouri to Memphis. Connecticut states you need a minimum of 150cc and have larger than 10" tires, and even has signs that state "Prohibited: Motor Scooters", but again I have never been hassled on multiple rides up to Cape Cod. Idaho, Kansas, and Kentucky also have posted signs prohibiting motor scooters from their freeways, but those states have failed in their law statutes to define what a motor scooter is, and I was hassled in neither Kentucky nor Kansas. Arizona requires that your scooter have at least 5bhp to travel on a freeway, so this makes all Vespas and Lambrettas 150cc and above freeway legal there. And it even makes a few oddball small displacement bikes (such as the Vespa T5 and SS90) freeway legal there as well. In New York, I know people who have been hassled by cops while riding P200s on suburban expressways, because clearly misinformed cops don't realize that a Class A motorcycle (freeway prohibited) has a maximum engine-size of 150cc. Nevada, in particular, only states that low-speed vehicles, defined as a vehicle capable of merely 30mph or less, can only travel on roads with a posted speed limit of 35mph or less. Meaning just about any scooter is freeway legal in Las Vegas. Enjoy, John M. Stafford P.S.
