Anyway, the general premise of Blue Break Beats was to showcase many of the
Blue Note recordings that became heavily sampled by hip hop DJs. Blue Note
presumably took a healthy interest in these DJ friendly compilations in the
early 90's with the popularity of US3, not to mention the Acid Jazz boom
at-large. Speaking of US3, I'd also suggest hunting down the double LP comp
"Straight No Chaser" which showcases all of the tunes that US3 sampled

I have the Us3 album and the liner notes say that most of the samples on
that album (as well as the title) came from the Cannonball Adderly (recently
deceased) LP "Us3" which was a live recording..I'm also willing to bet that
some of the samples are off of the well known
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" album...this being if you want to track down the
original tunes. The Blue Break Beats series has been on my wantlist for a
while, lots of juicy Watermelon Man style stuff. Speaking of ol' Herbie,
"Witch Doctor" has been remastered and released..I had a listen to it at HMV
in NYC and it's one of the best re-releases BlueNote has done.
