One night, some years ago, I was going inside my usual drinking grounds when
the guy who dj'd there grabbed me frantically by the neck and shouted "Come
with me! Look who's here!". He then brought me to a group of middle aged
gents who by the way they looked could only be English musicians, obviously
having a great time (the place was pretty good then). And in the middle of
them, in an ultraloud green suit, stood someone who I immediately recognised
to be George Bruno, Zoot Money himself. He had been playing that same night
with Kevin Ayers in a Spanish Communist Party meeting! He seemed to enjoy
very much my subsequent nervous breakdown and gave me an autograph. Anyway,
did I try to learn anything from this man, a true pillar of modernist
wisdom? Ask him a single question of utter importance? Anything I could tell
on the modslist 15 years from then? Of course not. After all, there was
plenty of beer to be had. Looking at how I was then I can't help but wonder
if my brain suddenly sprouted in the past few years. Bah.
