I'm aware of only six volumes on vinyl, but there may be more than that on
CD. I would definitely place the Lee Morgan and Grant Green volumes at the
top of the heap, followed by Reuben Wilson and Lou Donaldson, and then I'd
probably only buy the Bobbi Humphrey and Donald Byrd volumes if I was
really into 70s funk.
As Julian mentioned, we had been previously talking about the Various
Artist compilations of which I'd highly recommend volumes 1 & 2, then 4 and
save volume 3 until you have some extra cash just burning a hole in your
pocket (again, unless you *really* like funk).
I think it's a discontinued series now, but there was an excellent series
on 180 gram vinyl called the "Rare Groove Series" with excellent releases
by Lonnie Smith, Andrew Hill and John Patton, which came out in 1996 (or
1995?).
