I don't think so - I think that accusation held pretty true a few years ago
(towards the alternative types / indie kids / grunge kids whatever) but
while some of the music has stayed the same, it seems to me that a lot of
them don't think they're being alternative or different. My brothers
girlfriend, who's a normal trendy townie Ralph Lauren girl, has piercings
because it's fashionable, not as a statement. So I don't think it would be
right to say 'she thinks shes alternative with her piercings and she's not'
if she (for instance) doesn't care one bit. Also, it's all too imagine your
bearded free jazz/improv fanatic saying the same about mods - 'they don't
really care about music, it's all about clothes and listening to what you
think you should listen to - only bearded men look bad enough to truly care
about music'.
