Spice Girls must wait for scooter judgment
LONDON (Reuters) - The Spice Girls must wait to hear whether they will have
to pay around $2.54 million in damages to an Italian scooter company, the
High Court said Monday.
Aprilia has sued the Spice Girls in London over a sponsorship deal that it
said flopped after Geri Halliwell, formerly known as ``Ginger Spice,''
pulled out of the group to pursue a solo career.
Aprilia said it produced a special version of its Sonic scooter called
``Spice Sonic,'' complete with silhouettes of the girls on it after the deal
was done.
But the judge, Mary Arden, was told last week in the case, in which ``Baby
Spice'' Emma Bunton and Halliwell gave evidence, that the campaign fell flat
after Halliwell's departure.
Rossana Fuzzi, Aprilia's advertising manager, told the court: ``When Geri
left, all our brochures, advertising material and the logo became obsolete.
A very expensive commercial of the girls became unusable. This is what I
would call a total marketing flop.''
Arden said she would deliver her verdict at a later date. No date has been
set but it is expected to be before Easter, which this year falls on April
23.
