It was the comments about it being 'diluted' that caused offence - one 
of those words that always implies 'purity'. It questionable if there is 
a 'British' culture to be diluted anyway - it was regional before one 
nation under the BBC, and it looks like it's heading back that way. I 
mean the previous 'national dish', fish and chips, isn't that old itself 
- dates back to when people moved to the cities, really. Cricket on the 
village green? In the home counties and Yorkshire maybe. . .

Which does make me think about the things we (mods, 60s enthusiasts, 
etc) tend to like about America tend to be the things that were regional 
in the US (Detroit and Chicago soul, West Coast psyche, New York/Warhol) 
- what we object to (along with most sane Americans) is homogenous 
'American' culture - MTV, Disney, McDonalds, etc . .
