We also talk about liking soul music and the Small Faces, rather
electro-acoustic music and Serialism. There's talk of Joe Columbo and
Panton as well as Eames. It's a pick'n'mix subculture, not a consistent
movement, that happens to pick a lot from the visual side of Modernism
with a capital M.
As for the last point - personally I'd prefer that people didn't go back
into hiding. I'm just wish people would, if they're going to react to
backwards looking 'retro' culture just post something positive and
forward-looking about something they think is good and why it is good,
not just make the continued comment that 'mods should be into new
things' without saying what new things - after all it's not a mod OR a
modernist world out there anymore.
