Hey, I can't believe I'm defending the Monkees in public, but the above
statement about them not playing in their own records has been proved
wrong - at least after the first singles, which were made in a hurry in
order to capitalize on the TV shows success. Also, remember that in the 60s
most beginning bands were "encouraged" by their labels to use studio
musicians - shall we start dropping names? Personal fave Monkee song: "Mary,
Mary", a self-penned composition - but of course I like the Action MUCH
better - enough for them to give me the shivers during their live
re-appearance.
