Gavin,

The bar incident you describe sounds a lot like the
incident surrounding the 1950s death of R 'n' B singer
Johnny Ace--the man in the turban.

Ace was playing Russian roulette backstage. He lost.

As Tom Davis' post correctly states, The Great Sam
Cooke was shot and killed by a sleazy motel manager in
December 1964 for ALLEGEDLY trying to "rape" a
hooker/flim-flam artist whose last name, on that
particular evening, was Boyd.

Boyd was well known to LAPD at the time as she'd been
arrested for solicitation before. It should be noted
that Sam's wallet and credit cards were never found.
Incidentally, Boyd was jailed in 1979 for killing an
ex lover. The sleazy motel owner didn't live past
1966.

Cooke's death was/is a tragedy and the facts
surrounding the case are truly suspicious. He was,
however, no rapist.
