I disagree with the this statement "I see your point about how
annoying it would be for a 17 year old kid in a parka just asking for the
who. But even he has to be applauded for escaping what passes for music
today."
This disagreement is coming from a "kid's" point of view. I was 15
when I joined this list, and 18 now, I used to open my mouth up alot about
shit I didn't really know about, but had a soemwhat inkling of it's
existance. If someone brought up soul or whatnot, i would throw out the few
names I knew as to not seem "out of the loop". Then I realized this was all
pretty stupid and it is better to sit back and learn and listen about history
of music, then to feel you are an afficianado or special because you broke
the hour glass of modern music.
I do not think one should be applauded for not listening to the crap
that is out there, it is EASY enough to open your ears to the general roots
of music. In fact, with bands like the Who on the Simpsons, and the Zombies
on TAMPAX commercials it should bombard your ears moreso than the other crap.
It is as simple as turning off MTV and trying to figure out where it starts
(not insinuating it begins with The Who or The Zombies). A "kid in a parka
who comes up asking for the who" should be banished until he realizes that
there is more and although that may be the "best" to them, and should learn
to keep their mouth shut until they dip more than their toe into the water of
good music. I think it is almost worse to start to like this sort of music,
and then just STOP there, one should immerse themselves into the education
and pleasure of it, rather than think they have a grip. Okay my part is
done, back to the circles and circles of this list.
Sincerely, Chantal "18 with a bullet" Claret
