Yes, why are all these "mod" clubs way out in the
boonies? Perhaps out there the venues are cheaper to
get for the promoters. But I don't agree with the
misperception that one has only "substandard" clubs in
LA, that for the good stuff you have to be "dedicated"
and drive for 45min-1hour to a club to see the same
old "faces" doing their same old routine. For good
soul clubs in LA, one merely has to dig a little
deeper, look beyond the obvious clubs that billed
themselves as mod/60s/soul. In fact, this past Friday
night there was an awesome soul gig in...(gasp!)
Silver Lake (that's LA for folks who are not familiar
with the area). But was it billed as a "mod" club?
No. But the crowd was an interesting mix of folks who
want to dance to a good selection of soul spun by
several local djs as well as one from the group
Breakestra. Heck, there were even some
ex-skinheads/northern-soulers doing some fancy
footwork. Lots of dancing all around!
