Yeah, somewhere in 2.1.X I've made the error detection more correct for the
handshake phase. I think it's the problem where Netscape clients shutdown the
connection without communicating anything. With mod_ssl 2.2.X such messages
should no longer occur. As long as no SSLeay error messages really follows all
is usually ok.
When you've upgraded to mod_ssl 2.2.X please let me know whether the messages
disappear. Because when not, I've to investigate again. So, after uprading
please complain again when it still occurs.
