The determined bug-flow sounds realistic. I'll look at it after ApacheCon.
Just one question: Do you mean the latest mod_ssl 2.0.x or even 2.1bx?
Because for mod_ssl 2.1bX I've already fixed a few shutdown and failure cases
related to the SSL_free() stuff with the help of Eric A. Young. So, when you
have time perhaps you can try it also with mod_ssl 2.1b6. It would be very
useful to know if the bug still occurs there, too.
