I just tested this with Netscape Gold 3.0 on Solaris. I did
the following:
netscape https://www.thawte.com
At this point I received the "This Cert is expired" message.
Then I went to
https://www.thawte.com/certs/server/rollover/contents.html
and followed the instructions to delete the old cert and add
a new one.
At this point everything was fine, I went to another site
that I manage with mod_ssl and no error messages were
received.
Then I went to another of my sites (with apache+ssl) and
also received no complaints.
It seems to me that the solaris Netscape 3 is fine.
