For X.509 certificates there can be different versions. Version 1 certs have
no extensions, etc. Version 2 certs are not used in practice AFAIK and version
3 certs are the current canonical version where you can add extensions, etc.
The default is the canonical version. I recommend you to read documentation
about certificates.
