First, thank you for your great software. Just trying to be picky,
but this is what you want, don't you?


I tried to produce certificates manually as described in mod_ssl
chapter 6 without using make and $APACHE_HOME/src/support/mkcert.sh

Of course, the gory details are much, much more involved than the
description which you give, since you need to have the -config
argument on all the "openssl req" commands, and the appropriate
config files for the given type of request. I hopefully know how
to do it now by following your mkcert.sh file, but as it is described
in the FAQ, it does not work. I tried to create /usr/local/ssl,
copy there all *.cfn files from openssl-0.9.5/apps. Then it worked,
but it asked me different questions than the 
make certificate TYPE=custom
