To actually make load balancing work with SSL, you will need a pro
load-balancing solution.
You can either go with hardware: Altheon Switch (~$13k) - that is what
SlashDot (300,000 hits/day) uses.
Or you can go with software: Resonate (~$12k) - I tried, it's great if you
want to use your own hardware.

They both have advantages and disadvantages. I'll be happy to help
