i just copied one of my other built over for the certificate and it worked. 
this one was one that came from a package. also the command above showed 
that the certificates that came with the package was corrupted.

on the FAQ in the section about using openssl to generate a certifcate, it 
failed on the first command saying that genrsa unknown command.
