I have arrived here after several days of pain with Apache-SSL. I'm sure it's something I did, but I could find no combination of RPM's that'd work together. Apache+mod_ssl installed like a breeze and worked first time. Hoorah!

I had a question that I searched in the FAQ for, but could not fathom. In writing this email it dawned on me to search elsewhere and found the answer, trivially. Just for helpfulness, here's my answer -- since I've already typed most of the email!

I am curious, as to something I seem to have completely missed --

I installed and ran with default config. files. Seems fine, no response on port 80 and cheery 128-bit tip-top on port 443. Just as required, and I can review all the *wonderful* HTML doc's in glorious encryption.

    Q.        What stops anything being served up under HTTP at port 80?

I can't fathom from the config. files why the "main" server does nothing, and only the default virtual host responds. So, in the main config. file, the "Port 80" is effectively overlooked entirely.

    A.        The point is that the Virtual Host defined is referred to as "_default_" and a quick search in the Apache docs explains that this Virtual Host will match anything that's not listed elsewhere as a Virtual Host -- then the "main server" is only a default used in the *absence* of a "_default_" Virtual Server.

I guess I could write a better version for a FAQ if my doing so would be less effort for the maintainer than just typing a one-liner themselves! Hmmm... I'm assuming adding to the FAQ actually is hassle for someone. Maybe not. I'll keep my eye open for that one.

Thanks,
James.
