Apxs usually does it right - /path/to/apache/bin/apxs -q CFLAGS will tell you.
Trying without JRun is probably a good way to go.
Runnig /path/to/apache/bin/httpd -X -DSSL -f new_httpd.conf will allow you
to run a single httpd process that you could try running your debugger on, and
then just keep torturing it until it cores :)
