My humble suggestion is to add the following text to the email message sent
when a new member subscribes to the list:
"name-based virtual hosts cannot be used with SSL. Do not post this
question to the list as you will receive multiple RTFM replies. Please read
the FAQ on this topic."
My own solution to this problem is to define non-SSL name-based VHs, each of
which redirects to an SSL IP-based VH using a separate port number for each.
of course, my firewall has to pass these port numbers as well.
