I have the same problem.

I have another idea, but I don't know if this would work (I'm a beginner
with SSL):
Would it make sense to have one "main" server www.mycompany.com
and let it route requests to "application servers" based on virtual path
with mod_rewrite,
like https://www.mycompany.com/app{nnn}/blah -->
https://192.168.1.{nnn}/blah.
If I have only one server certificate for www.mycompany.com,
do I have to install it on the main server or on the application servers or
everywhere?
If the main server is hosting other companies as well (virtual hosts)
and if it is necessary to install the certificate there, will there be
conflicts with other certificates?
