Thanks for the fast reply:

Well, that remains a mystery. I completely wiped out the source and install
directories before starting the whole process again (in other words,
/usr/local/apache did not exist). Where httpsd came from, I don't know.

Hmmm. Can do, but this is a crash-and-burn machine. No load anticipated.
If dbm is plain flaky, I'll add it but I was trying to keep the number of
variables to a minimum.

>>Can you post your exact instructions you used to build/install mod_ssl?

Errr, no. I didn't capture it. But I did the cookbook list from the
mod_ssl distribution.  As I recall . . .:

        $ cd openssl-0.9.6
        $ sh config
        $ make
        $ make test
        $ cd ../mod_ssl-2.7.x-1.3.14
        $ ./configure \
              --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14 \
              --with-ssl=../openssl-0.9.6 \
              --prefix=/usr/local/apache
        $ cd ..
        $ cd apache_1.3.14
        $ make
        $ make certificate
        $ make install
        $ cd ..
