I haven't completed my testing yet, so this is an initial result. Although
I'm seeing that much speed improvement (using the "openssl speed" tests),
I'm also seeing a significant drop in the amount of CPU utilisation. So
perhaps I should factor into the speed improvements the amount of extra CPU
available.

Even if it were the case that you would get only 3x improvement on a 1Ghz
P3, you would still have substantially more CPU processing available. 

It is alleged that the upcoming Itanium will be optimised for SSL
computation, but until then I believe the only practical alternative is
these cards. 

Oh, and to answer the question, about 1000 GBP. If you think that's
expensive, the Intel accelerators cost over 5000 GBP. The advantage to the
latter is that you don't have to open your machine (not that it bothers me,
I'm always taking them apart).
