I believe you can still get wildcard certificates from Thawte for $500, but
I've not been able to find exact information recently. I certainly hope you
can because ours expires in July. 

Basically, a wildcard certificate is in the form *.mydomain.com, and can
cover any number of secure servers at your site. However,

1. You can't create them with IIS. You can install them after creating them
with openssl
2. Microsoft don't support them very well, and keep breaking the support for
them in their browsers. (And why not, say the MS supporters, since SSL was
invented by their rival Netscape?)
