We're running:
Apache/1.3.17 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.8.0 OpenSSL/0.9.6
on Solaris 2.8 with no problems. This is the latest configuration.
If you really want to work with apache_1.3.12, you could use
mod_ssl-2.6.6-1.3.12 and openssl-0.9.5a (worked for us at the time).
