The 501 is because it is an illegal request - try GET / HTTP/1.0 instead
or make sure that you send all the required headers when using HTTP/1.1.

messed up your httpd.conf - HTTPS is usually on port 443, not on 80. 
Your third attempt does actually make a valid request - you just have to
get the request right.
