IMO the only person who can speak to this particular point is Graham Barr.
Until Graham says its not worth waiting for IMO the best thing is to work towards putting the TLS functionality in that module.
If the OP has difficulty doing so then perhaps he could or should ask for help to do so.
Im sure the folks on Perlmonks for one would be happy to help.
