Is there any good reason why I would need to keep versions
older than about a year or two around?
You don't. Nothing deleted dies anyway; it just goes to the afterlife at BackPAN.
In order to facilitate the CPAN grep and diff tools you should
probably leave the 3 or 4 most recent versions and a couple of
old major releases around, but you certainly don't need to keep
every single pointrelease from the last 6 years around.
---- I'm nervous about doing a find <older than 1-2 years since some CPAN items have several point releases in the past year or two, while others may have had no new releases in the past year or two --- would be nice if there was an easy way to clean up outdated releases, but how to 'easily' decide. Sure, one could get complex and write a perl script to do it (:-)), but it might be nice to have a CPAN config variable to tell it to only keep the last "X" point releases (where X = whatever is needed to keep grep/diff tools happy)....
But from what I hear, I'm on my own -- though CPANplus, I heard, may solve this problem... Now if only Activestate could have their packaging needs handled by The One Package Manager! :-) 1 Package manager to bind them all, to distribute them, to hold them all in whatever corner of the net...etc..:-)
