Hi,

I would like to improve the coverage of the CPAN distributions available as
binary packages in the various distributions.

If you look at the stats I created recently ActiveState provide 5-7000 modules
depending on platform while FreeBSD has only 2600, Debian only 1000 and
others probably even fewer though the others distros are not represented well
in the report. See http://www.szabgab.com/distributions/

While one can install many module quite easily using CPAN.pm or CPANPLUS
I assume that as most of the people won't want to compile and install their
own Apache or MySQL they won't want to install their CPAN modules from
source either. Especially not those that need compilation and even less
those that require external libraries.

I assume this to be especially true for users who merely want to use an
application written in Perl and requiring tens of modules.

So I would like to somehow encourage people to add more modules to the
various distros.

I would like to get your help for this.

As a minimum I think we need a document describing the process of adding a
module to the various distros.
We could also create some guide lines how to prioritize addition of modules.
When to upgrade a module?

It might be also good to have a mailing list where all these people
could discuss
the issues they are facing. Is there an existing mailing list or shall
we setup for this
yet another mailing list?

I have started to write up something regarding this
http://svn1.hostlocal.com/szabgab/trunk/CPAN-Porters/

What do you think?
