That does look interesting, though a few questions come to mind. If it was done as outofband data behind a plain string - how would the methods get called? How would a method get called after a substr() modify operation, to go and fix up the tags afterwards. That said, maybe some tags would want to imply a locking effect, banning the disturbance of the character positions beneath them.
