Ah; I purposely didn't include that because it isn't finished in some
parts - I wanted an idea of what people thought of the interface first, I
can hack up those ideas behind the method names later ;)

Hmm.. That does look interesting, though a few questions come to mind.

If it was done as outofband data behind a plain string - how would the
methods get called?

How would a method get called after a substr() modify operation, to go
and fix up the tags afterwards. That said, maybe some tags would want to
imply a locking effect, banning the disturbance of the character
positions beneath them. This would have to veto the substr() before it's
even called.
