So a tarball name has some external meaning that doesn't require
opening it up each time to find out what it contains?

    Foo-Bar-[your SHA1 here].tar.gz

    vs

    Foo-Bar-1.2345.tar.gz

Why do rpm/deb packages have version numbers on them?  Same issue.
